Excellent! I might have to do this sometime next week...one of the stand bolts vibrated out, and I had to take the stand off until I got a new bolt & sleeve, etc. I realized the springs are under quite a bit of tension, and was worried about getting it back on (at least, without knocking the bike over or loosing a finger )

I did a similar trick last night to test my new stand.

1. Tape and cardboard up swing arm!
2. Bolt up loosely right hand side.
3. Hang spring from bike mount.
4. Bend center stand towards front of bike to allow for springs to slip over the stand hook.
5. Use a 2 foot wooden 2x4 over left side footrest to force center stand to rear to line up hole front-to-back.
6. Use floor jack to lift center stand at the bolt to align with hole up-and-down.
7. Insert bolt and voila.

I could almost do it with the 2x4 but I just could not get the perfect angle to align the hole in all directions, the small floor jack was just the ticket and it only took me about 60 seconds to mount this thing once I figured this out.

Used the same 2x4 trick over the footpeg to remove the stand (didn't bother with the jack obviously), the 2x4 provided enough leverage to get the bolt out safely and let the tension off the stand.

I tackled the spring last when I remounted my stand (which has fallen off again and is awaiting parts for a dealer warrantee fix as of right now).

I put the stand in place, both bolts, hung the spring from the top hook, then used heavy gauge wire and a pry bar (with some wood supports) to lever the spring down to the lower hook and attach it. Then wire cutters to clear the jig. If you do this, make sure the wire is strong enough to take quite a load. And which ever way you do it, I recommend saftey glasses and gloves.

 

And a few beers...

 

Something tells me this is going to be a pain-in-the-ass! I was concerned about the bike just falling over, but now, I'm certainly going to do this job with help!

Jim, don't worry at all. When I put the stand on the second time, I used just the 2x4 to lever the second left side bolt hole into position, didn't need the jack at all. Took seconds.

Just picked up my bike today from Manhattan BMW, and they charged me for the damn centerstand hardware. $17 bucks for a nut, bolt, washer, and sleeve! I asked why it wasn't warrantied, as my bike is still well within the warranty period...they said "because the stand wasn't on the bike, they couldn't warranty it". URGGHH! I couldn't ride the bike in with just one bolt on it - it was smacking against the bottom of the exhaust! Maybe a few miles, but not the 120 mile trip to NYC from Philadelphia. It's only $17 bucks - I'm not that upset about it. But I still think I might email the dealer...maybe send it to the salesman that sold me the bike (they usually have some good pull around dealerships). It's just the principle though - the damn thing vibrated out, I didn't take it off or anything!

And they also gave me a black filter (which honestly I couldn't care less about)....they said all F800 filters are now black. coughcoughBULLSHITcoughcough.

What a lot of bull. I got free hardware when it fell off the first time & I'm getting another set this time. And this time I'm going to have them put the damn thing on for me too. The only remaining bother is the pain in the ass of going in, leaving the bike & NOT HAVING A LOANER, BMW TORONTO!!! HOW ABOUT IT!!!

 

Hey anyone know the torque specs for the center stand bolts? Also, would you recommend I go tighter than what is specified? Or, maybe use a thread locker? I just don't want one of them to vibrate out again. This will be the first time I get to use my shiny new torque wrench

Do not go any tighter...it is useless and you might harm the engine case.

Just use a thread locker.

I did that on my ST and i have no issues for the last 5.500Km.

You see i lost too the right bolt some time ago.

 

I also found that when I over tightened it slightly the stand was not as smooth, it was binding when putting it down. So I backed it right off and re-torqued it.

I also used blue loctite for now but I plan to replace those nuts with proper locknuts (and blue loctite lol).

Thanks for the tip I did exactly what you posted and it was pretty easy to do. I used the ratchet type tie down and got the left side bolt in with ease. For those asking for the torque values on the center Stand it is 40 Newton meters. Only problem I found was the center stand I received from BMW Chicago did not have the rubber stopper on it so it hit the connector pipe for my exhaust pipe. I called them and they are sending one today!!
