Unlocking board computer in bikes without one

Thought this might be useful info for some of you. Reading around on a polish forum I found out you can unlock the board computer on the F800 series as well as R1200. Under the plastic blank there's actually a full LCD screen on all bikes. It turns out you can unlock the board computer with the Motoscan app if you have at least the OBDLink LX tool.

Basically you need:

- replacement instrument cluster cover for full board computer ( it's easier than modifying the original, just buy a chinese clone )
- replacement left handlebar button cluster with BC button
- air temperature sensor
- Motoscan app and OBD tool + OBD to BMM Motorrad adapter

The only thing to keep in mind is that they say you need to activate all the functions one by one.

Interesting how the LCD panel is present but obscured! Someone in accounting did the math and realized it was cheaper to keep the functionality but hide it rather than create a version without.

The Motoscan app has come along since it's first release but has a ways to go before fully competing with a GS911. For example, allowing the registration of new tire pressure monitoring sensors.

Competition will be good for us owners. We may see the GS911 come down in price.

In theory it should allow for TPS registration. There's definitely an option for that. I think it works, at least on the R1200 bikes.

One true downside is that the functionality of motoscan is very bike dependent. On some you can do a lot, on others, not so much. Plus navigating around the app isn't exactly easy. There's a lot of programming options that you can't be 100% sure what they do.

On the board computer unlock. On the F800 you can unlock it to full functionality. On R1200 it seems there are physical differences between the 2 versions of the bike and some things cannot be unlocked. I think there's some sensor in the engine block that's absent on the cheaper version of the bike. Plus there's a different fuel tank sensor.

The app also teases you with Enduro Pro mode when your bike doesn't have one.
At least you can restore from your first backup if you got too deep into the settings and while driving realize your info button now cycles only through odometer and trip meters.

All shipping with LCD that is hidden is pretty wild.

I know this is a bit old thread, but wanted to add a little bit here.

My 2008 F650GS did only have 1/2 display working, and after reading this thread i went for OBD link lx and motoscan app. So after a little bit of work i turned on Gear indicator, High variant KL and Tanktemp display. Tanktemp turns on Fuel bar and temp bar on either side of the gear counter. Brilliant stuff.

Hi
I've a f800r with the half display and I've just unlocked all the features using Motoscan. You need to purchase the ultimate app to do the coding but once it purchased it's so easy and takes only a few minutes. The biggest problem is the half screen. Second hand bezels are nowhere to be found and a new one from BMW is ÂŁ182 for a lump of black plastic. Unfortunately the blanking on the half screen is glued to to the screen. I've cut the whole screen out and I'm fitting a new screen which will need sealing in with silicone. Then I'm fitting a over sized bezel which are cheap to buy over the original surround to hide the cutting. Seems like a lot of work but it's easy to do .

Hey there,

I just joined the forum. I recently did my first solo service, which I've been meaning to do for years now, so I'm finally back in full bike mode after taking a brake following an accident.

I realised the same thing the other day during the service. It's amazing and I'm glad I finally found someone else talking about it.

It sucks that they glued your cover on.how cheeky is that!? I have a BMW F650GS TWIN and I could just pull the cover up.

In case anyone else wants to do this I found two useful things.

1. This post describes all the features you can turn on using motoscan with a lot of detail...
https://advrider.com/f/threads/enab.../threads/enabling-obc-on-board-computer-on-f800gs-f700gs-with-motoscan.1468916/

2. I don't know if it's the case for your bike, but I was able to find relatively cheap replacement front covers on eBay for about ÂŁ20-30 by searching for BMW F650/800GS INSTRUMENT CLUSTER COVER. I don't know about the quality as the cheap ones are from China, but I'll look further into it.

Good luck with your dashboard upgrade and thanks for making a post. I'm sure more people would to enable an upgrade that's basically hidden behind a piece of plastic!! 🙂
