Hi All,

I am new here and I am securing a purchase of my first motorcycle. I hope it will be an F800ST, 2008 that I found recently. I have had strong interest in motorbikes in the '80s and '90s, but have never owned one. I can't wait to start enjoying the hobby.
I am based in Éire, south east of the island.

All the best ;-).

Welcome to the forum, Seweryn. I am sure you will love riding your ST. Just be careful out there. And do your best to stay away from car and truck drivers. They can be unpredictable when they are paying attention to their phones or other passengers in their vehicle, instead of what is going on around them on the highway.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I see you are located all over the world :).

The bike in question is a 2008 ST, first registration in October. I am awaiting the helmet to arrive and better weather to pick up the bike (located an hour and half away). I will update once all is sorted.

Welcome from Quebec (Canada)
This place is all you need to know your F800 in and out!
Got a 2007 ST with over 143k on it and still going strong. I love it and I’m sure you will to.
Hey,great news on your 143k,any failures to watch out for, ever done the valve clearances.
Good to know what to watch out for,my st is still in the 50k zone.
Thanks peter,

I got my bike at 123k km and I’m 4th owner so I don’t have all its service records… Early models (prior 2012-13) are notorious for burning stators every 40-60 000km. Several posts address this issues and solutions. Replaced mine at around 130ish. Then last year the regulator acted funny. I replaced the oem one with a series shunt regulator and I’m very glad I did. It runs WAY cooler than the oem and suspect it will help keep the stator temperature down. I strongly suggest you install a voltage monitor to keep an eye on the charging system as stator/regulator failures are usually sudden but tell- tell signs are obvious if voltage is monitored.

Don’t know if the valves ever got adjusted but I guess at least once by the previous owner who took good care of it. But he engine doesn’t show any signs that the valves are off. Besides the usual agricultural sounds it makes:LOL:

That is impressive. Over 140k km on a motorbike is a great achievement.
I can't wait to put a few km on the clock. Actually, as the bike was imported, it counts in miles, which is something I would like to change. I hope there is a way of changing the menu to display in SI units of measurements.

Anyway, the insurance is now sorted for tomorrow and in about 28 hours I should be driving the bike home :).

Funny you say that, my bike was also imported from the US and was in milles. The owners manual doesn’t say how but surely it can be done cause my computer displays in km. So most likely can be done by the dealer. Only the ambiant temperature sensor remains in Fahrenheit.

Once your at it , you could also ask your dealer to reset the “service” counter to “infinity” so you won’t be bothered with the annoying service warning light.

I brought the bike home today, quite excited (more than those two in the background). She runs great as far as I can tell. 26.4k miles (42.5k km) on the clock, manufactured 1st October 2008. Now time for a drink and I am sure you will hear from me asking some silly questions :).

MotoScan App (Ultimate licence) can change miles to KM, Fahrenheit to Centigrade and PSI to Bar (tyre pressure monitor if fitted)

No doubt aware but MotoScan app can reset your service reminder. Given the total cost for MotoScan Ultimate licence and hardware required to work with F800 is around £100 it may be cheaper than getting the dealer to make the changes and of course you then have the app to use with the F800 or any other BMW bike you may get in the future.

Thanks, I will look into this at some stage.

For now I have ordered the bushes for the gear lever axle to eliminate the play of the lever, and after looking carefully I have noticed an oil leak - probably from the head cover gasket. Will probably order a set to sort this out.

Closterman... can you share with me where you got the OEM series shunt regulator from? I got mine replaced with an original, but it's running pretty warm so I would like a cooler voltage regulator.

Many thanks,
Maverick.
