Hello,

I own a BMW F800ST and recently noticed a metallic knocking / clunking noise when the bike is idling in neutral.

Here are the details:

  • The noise is most noticeable at idle, especially when the engine is warm.
  • It is a periodic “tok/tok” sound, not a constant scraping noise.
  • When I pull the clutch lever in, the noise changes (sometimes reduces or disappears).
  • The sound seems to be coming from the right side of the engine (clutch / transmission area), not from the cylinder head.
  • Performance and gear shifting feel normal, but I’m concerned about potential wear or damage.

Possible causes I’ve considered:

  • Clutch basket wear (play in the basket fingers)
  • Worn or failing clutch release bearing (throw-out bearing)
  • Primary drive gear play or transmission bearing wear
  • Less likely: camshaft or valve train noise (as the sound is lower-pitched)

I’d like to confirm the source of the noise before it causes further damage. What would be the recommended diagnostic steps for this model?

Thank you in advance.

I have noticed this with every motorcycle I have owned. Idle (in neutral) is significantly quieter with the clutch pulled.
I wouldn't be especially concerned unless the difference is excessive or has changed dramatically over a short period of time.

Have you compared yours to a similar F800 Twin?

I dont have any similar f800st around and aound has changed dramatically last 5-7 days. Last 500 km actually. Some says every f800st has this engine problem it needs to be changed almost all engine parts. I m writing feom turkey. So i am not really aure what to do 😓

My very low milage 2007 ST has a clutch "chatter" noise when in neutral with the clutch out. That is normal. BUT if the sound has gotten louder (changed significantly) in the past few days, it is highly advisable to pull it apart and have a look at the clutch. Specifically the posible causes you has mentioned. If something "lets go" it will typically do more damage than you would like. Just my thoughts.
