Low mount exhaust for F800R?

So, I have been thinking dangerous thoughts lately.

My former roommate (who coincidentally convinced me to get into motorcycles) got a new exhaust for his FZ-07. I believe it was the carbon/carbon Akropovic. After seeing that, i got jealous of the low mount exhaust. It makes the back of the bike look so tidy without the can obstructing the view.

Link to his exhaust. The gallery has a shot of the carbon/carbon: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/akrapovic-racing-exhaust-system-yamaha-fz-07-2015-2016

So I am thinking of modifying my F800R to accept a low mount muffler.

I know it won't be easy. I was a welder/fabricator before I got my cushy QC job, so I am well aware of how difficult this endeavor will be.

The thing I am having trouble with is finding an appropriate muffler as a starting point. Everywhere I look, I can't seem to find just a generic small low mount muffler. Everything is aimed at specific bikes, and I am somewhat lacking in my knowledge of other bikes. Ideally, I think something off of a bike with similar displacement so flow would be close enough , but it would have to be set up for the LH side of the bike.

Anyone know of something that might fit the bill?

You're not alone after all. I'm also looking into getting a low mount muffler (and, if possible, a shorty exhaust). I have no idea how to do this especially when aftermarket exhausts for BMW bikes are quite limited. My knowledge is quite limited for now so I'm very interested to see what you'll be able to come up with.

Please update me with your progress. I need all the help I can get.

Later and good luck...

it would be quite the accomplishment, if you can build something like that..low exhausts are deeply engineered around the bike, and vice-versa ; I believe maybe you could reach that point in which you succeed in sticking a small can under your f800r, but for sure it would stick out in a weird way from the bike..and most probably, be absurdly noisy due to the low dimension (this may be or may be not an issue , if you like to race it or use it as commuter while respecting the law...and not risking with the police stopping you).

I can definitely see the potential for issues. I have been looking things over a pretty good bit, and I think I can get it to fit without any awkward angling or anything like that. I don't believe it will start under the bike and stick out a bit like the FZ-07, but I am imagining one that will angle a bit lower at the end of the stock header/cat pipe, and be shorter overall length. This should enable it to stay clear of the swingarm, and also drop it down to keep it visually out of the space between the tire and the rear seat. I may have to come up with a new style bracket to mount it to the pillion peg section of the frame, but should fit without too much hassle unless I rush things.

The noise, on the other hand...... My current 2 Bros exhaust is pretty loud, so if I can keep it to that level at most I will consider it a success. I am thinking that an exhaust for a bike with a similar size motor will hopefully get the levels somewhat near acceptable. I just need to find one to use as a starting point.......

We will see how far I get with this. If I end up keeping this bike I will probably do it, but I may end up getting something else before I get around to it. I like the bike overall, but there are a bunch of little things I would like to change that would come standard on a different bike.

Good call. Looking through their webpage, I am imagining something like the CR2 Megaphone style can mounted low. The more I look at it the more I doubt I can go for the super short exhaust I was originally considering (not enough room under the bike), but I am getting some ideas.

I believe the F800S/ST rear frame would bolt up and offer a lower exhaust mounting point. The front frames are the same part number, and the exhaust mounting seems to be the biggest difference between the rears. I need to get my hands on an S or and ST to take some measurements to be 100% sure, though.

There is also the option of coming up with an alternate mounting bracket that would mimic the one from the S/ST functionally, but not involve any costly and time intensive swapping parts or welding (Not that I mind, just considering if someone wants to follow me down the rabbit hole).

S/ST exhausts may work at that point, but I doubt it. I believe the single-sided swingarm gives them more clearance and the bend from the end of the header to the can are way different (and smoother) than what we have to work with. That being said, it is a fairly simple task at that point to come up with a slightly different routing for the piping.

This is the picture that really got me thinking. I am thinking that general position, but the CR2 megaphone would be shorter than this and since it is a bit tapered would help alleviate any concerns about it sticking out too much at the bottom. I finally found their storefront, but getting the one I want looks like it will end up a bit on the pricey side (I guess I have expensive tastes).

Also in the running is the MIVV carbon oval. Much less expensive, and sounds damn good. Not as much customization, though that may not matter much in the end result.

All that being said, I have been working too much lately to make much headway. I will post updates here when I make progress or have any other hair-brained schemes.

Yeah, I thought about that as well. The hard part is finding a bike specific exhaust that will fit without having access to another of other bikes to measure to see if they would fit.

I ordered an F800S header, which ditches the cat and gives a more favorable angle to play with.

I also took the plunge on an F800S rear subframe so I get the pillion peg exhaust hanger and don't have to cut up my stock one.

And finally, since I don't like to do things half-assedly, I ordered a MIVV full carbon fiber exhaust to match the new headers and subframe.

Even if I don't keep the MIVV on there and go with something else in the long run, I think these headers will be easier to work with for anything else I switch to.

I'm pulling this one back up since I found it in a search. I was looking for "underbelly exhaust" in hopes someone makes one that fits these bikes since so many other bikes on the market are starting to come with these as stock. I'm after one to make clearance for my saddle bags but also to clean up appearance and maybe save a few pounds when the bags are off.

I'm still looking but has anyone come across a proper aftermarket exhaust that eliminates the huge can?
