Dry sump engines are always a challenge when it comes to accurate oil level readings. Luckily, they are also less susceptible to problems from slight over- or under-filling, so it all comes out in the wash.

With many years of Honda 750 and Porsche dry sump experience, I don't worry about my F800 as long as the level is somewhere between the marks with hot oil. I do wonder why BMW doesn't specify checking with the engine running, which is one way to "stabilize" the level in a dry sump system, but I guess the risk of that plastic dipstick getting chewed is too great [g].
