Hi All,

I have checked the oil selector tool on the Ravenol website and found that depending on the model year of the F800ST you chose, there are different oils being proposed, i.e. they suggest synthetic oil for later model year.

Are the engines from say 2010 physically different than 2008 (apart from the colour - grey vs black)? I thought they are about identical, but I am open to be corrected.

There was a change in piston to stop piston slap that occurred during ST production, I don't know the date of the change, I'm sure others will be able to enlighten us. As far as I know that's the only major change. Don't think it would make any difference to the oil recommendations though.

You can use any oil of the correct viscosity recommended by the manufacturer that is rated JASO MA or MA2. Using a semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil is fine. A full synthetic oil will typically flow quicker when cold and should provide a longer drain interval than a "conventional" oil, especially under severe usage.

Thanks Richard. I am familiar with engine oils and would prefer synthetic for the reasons you mentioned. Actually, Motul oil selector does not differentiate between model years and lists synthetic for all model years. I have been using Ravenol with great results and it was the reason I have checked them first.

Yeah, I am looking at this subject also. There is a lot to read .

BMW changed the spec only because it changed oil suppliers and consolidated down to two oils across all models.
