Engine Dying at Deceleration

The new 2010 F658GS is quite nice, and all that I expected. The stock high seat is even tolerable for rides up to about 300 miles. I'm using a Beadrider however, and that DOES make a difference.

One little thing I've noticed that irks me. This happened once before the 600 mile Run-In service and again on Sunday when I left Atlanta for the trip I'm on now (at 800 miles).

What happens is this: I am running in traffic shifting up and gaining speed but as I approach a light or other obstacle where I need to slow down, I pull in the clutch to downshift and the bike just DIES! It doesn't just die either, if I let the clutch back out it is as if it is in "0" gear, (not neutral) I mean LOW Low LOW, locked up, below first! The wheel grabs and once almost threw me off into a skid. (non-ABS). I quickly have to pull the clutch in again and retry the starter button, which seems to work once I am slow enough. Then it runs fine.

It happened at two consecutive traffic lights leaving Atlanta Sunday. Luckily there was not much traffic. I kinda pulled to one side and it restarted okay.

Any comments, suggestions etc.? Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone have an idea what gives?

Had the same problem with my '09 F658. Dealer changed the fuel pump electronics. That was 3000 miles ago. Hasn't stalled since.

Also inspect the drain tube that goes from the charcoal cannister (zip-tied to the right side of the frame) to the underside of the bike. It will suck in water and hold it. Simple fix is to cut in a plastic tee (Autozone) near the top. This breaks the vacuum.

Mine did do this a little before my 600 mile service. It also died yesterday taking off from a light. First, I thought 'oops, that's embarrassing.' Then I hit the starter and all the lights died and I thought 'oops, that's embarassing.'

Dealer thinks it could be the battery, they said if a cell dies it goes bad very quickly. I wonder if it was dying oddly (three times in the past 6 months, definitely not me) as a foreshadow of the battery cell dying. They are probably going to do my two new recalls at the same time (lower rad hose and fuel level sensor).

I was at my dealer the other day complaining to the parts guy about the batteries that they sell not lasting very long. He mentioned that if it was him, he would not replace the F800GS's Exide battery with a another one, but instead use a similar Yuasa battery that is the same size they also sell. Especially as the Yuasa sells for $90 and the original German-made BMW Exide battery sells for $150.

Mine has done it a few times too. I think the compression of the engine is the reason the clutch cant be popped to restart. I have never had a passenger on when this happens to see if weight on the rear wheel would let the engine turn over.... Someday. I dont think its a big deal unless you get sideways trying to do the "pop the clutch trick". It has only happened when the clutch has been pulled in, so I just hit the starter and it fired right up.

The computer seems to change the injectors or firing parameters constantly. Wonder if that has anything to do with it? It seems that if running the bike hard and then while idling twist the throttle and it has one hell of a spark knock/misfire. (spark knock right when you can hear the clank of the valves?) Just a guess...

At least 3-4 times on my '09 F650. Fortunately, every time it happened I was coming to a complete stop at a red light. Not sure it's happening enough to make a special trip to the dealer, but maybe I'll mention it at my next scheduled service.

I had same exact issue it seemed to go away after about 1500 miles on the bike....
