I was concerned, but I cleand the crossbar, used a thick Black paint in a few thin coats, then used a part of inner tube lengthwise the crossbar and the uprights and used contact cement and as a back up used black zip ties 2 or 3 pre section cut to wrap around. I have done that on all by bikes for the last 20 years, never had a problem. the thicker rubber is a great guard resisting all sand and rocks and stones. I also do it on my 2 BMWsif it ever rips or comes loose it is a cheap fix. PSI also did a fender extender to keep nicks and damage on the engine.
